It’s official: Perma is now a Certified B Corporation®

We’re over the moon to share some fantastic news: Perma Collective has officially joined the B Corporation family! This certification marks a monumental step for us as we align ourselves with a global community of businesses dedicated to balancing purpose and profit. Becoming a Certified B Corporation means we’ve committed to the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

The path to B Corp certification isn’t for the faint-hearted. To qualify, companies must go through the B Impact Assessment, which scrutinises every aspect of the business across five key impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers.

As a small company of just two people, the ‘Workers’ impact area didn’t apply to us, which presented an additional challenge in reaching the required 80 points. However, we focused on our Impact Business Models (IBMs), which are designed to create specific positive outcomes for our stakeholders. Our dedication to supporting underserved and purpose-driven enterprises through these IBMs was crucial in securing our certification. We’re excited to share that we have successfully achieved a score of 80.4, demonstrating our commitment to making a positive impact.

As of February 2024, the B Corp community boasts 8,254 certified organisations across 162 industries in 96 countries. With the median score for most businesses hovering only around 50.9, it’s clear that becoming a B Corp requires dedication and diligence. The certification process can take up to two years and involves a thorough examination of a company’s operations. Nonetheless, even after all our battles for data points, the rewards far outweigh the effort.

For us at Perma Collective, becoming a Certified B Corporation was a natural evolution. Our core values have always been rooted in social and environmental responsibility. This certification not only future-proofs our business but also ensures resilience and sustainability in a rapidly changing world. We firmly believe in the power of community and collective action, and our B Corp certification solidifies this commitment.

This achievement is more than just a badge of honour – it’s a commitment to continuous improvement. It aligns us even more closely with our stakeholders’ values, offering insights into sustainable practices while reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. By embedding these principles into our company articles, we ensure that our purpose-driven approach remains at the core of our identity.

We hope our journey inspires other companies to pursue B Corp certification. The process has strengthened our foundation and clarified our practices, empowering us to forge ahead with confidence. We’re excited about the future and the positive impact we can continue to make as a certified B Corporation.

Thanks as always to everyone, especially our collective, for supporting us on this journey. Together, we can redefine business success and contribute to a better world.

Perma’s three takeaways to completing the B Corp process

1: Get a Consultant!

As a small business, many areas of the BIA simply don’t apply. Having someone to guide you and protect you from jumping down unnecessary rabbit holes was vital for us.

We used Els from fromatogreen.com, who is a dream to work with. If you would like a personal introduction, just reach out at hello@perma-collective.com.

2: Share the Love!

Divide the responsibilities of compiling information for each impact area. As every producer knows, spinning lots of plates can be particularly overwhelming. By ensuring everyone participates in understanding the company’s impact, you foster overall well-being within the company.

3: Enjoy the Process!

There will be moments when some of the language sounds complicated and alien, but like learning any language, it takes time and perseverance. With every requirement, we gained a deeper understanding of our purpose through the process. Soon, you’ll be dreaming in B Corp, trust!
